Fenqihu
Nestled in the misty mountains of central Taiwan, Fenqihu is a charming old railway town that feels frozen in time. Once a bustling logging hub during the Japanese colonial era, today it's a peaceful stop on the Alishan Forest Railway, known for its nostalgic wooden station, fragrant bento boxes, and cool mountain air. The town's main street is lined with traditional shops selling local specialties, making it a delightful detour for travellers exploring Taiwan's mountainous interior.
Highlights & What to See
- Fenqihu Old Street – A compact, atmospheric lane packed with food stalls and souvenir shops. Don't miss the famous Fenqihu bento (便当), a simple yet iconic lunchbox of rice, pork chop, and pickled vegetables.
- Fenqihu Train Station – A beautifully preserved wooden station from 1912, still in use on the Alishan Forest Railway. Watch the old trains chug in and out, and explore the small railway museum inside.
- Fenqihu Old Jail – A rare surviving Japanese-era prison made of hinoki (cypress) wood, now a small museum offering a glimpse into local history.
- Cloud-Shrouded Forest Walk – A short, easy trail behind the station that winds through mossy cypress groves and bamboo thickets, often enveloped in mist – a photographer's dream.
- Alishan National Scenic Area – Fenqihu serves as a gateway to Alishan's famous sunrise, sea of clouds, and giant red cypress trees. Many travellers combine a visit here with a trip up the mountain.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours exploring Fenqihu, which is enough time to wander Old Street, visit the jail, and take the short forest walk. If you're planning to ride the Alishan Forest Railway up to Alishan itself, allocate a full day for the round trip, including time in Fenqihu. The town also makes a pleasant overnight stop if you want to experience the quiet mountain atmosphere after the day-trippers leave.
