Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island, just a 25-minute ferry ride from Perth, is a car-free paradise of white-sand beaches, turquoise bays, and the world’s happiest marsupial – the quokka. This former penal settlement is now a protected nature reserve where you can cycle between secluded coves, snorkel over vibrant coral reefs, and explore a fascinating colonial past. With no private vehicles allowed, the island’s laid-back pace is perfect for a day trip or longer stay.
Highlights & What to See
- Quokka Selfies: These friendly, smiley marsupials are everywhere – especially around the settlement. Get a selfie (but don’t touch or feed them).
- Cycling the Island: Hire a bike and pedal the 22 km of sealed roads to reach pristine beaches like The Basin, Little Parakeet Bay, and Pinky Beach.
- Snorkeling & Diving: The clear waters of Parker Point and Little Salmon Bay teem with colourful fish, sea stars, and coral. Gear hire is available at the main settlement.
- Wadjemup Lighthouse: Climb the island’s oldest lighthouse for panoramic views of the island and mainland. It’s a steep but rewarding ride or walk.
- Oliver Hill Battery: Explore WWII gun emplacements and tunnels. A fun train ride from the settlement gets you there (seasonal).
- Rottnest Island Museum: Housed in an old barn, this small museum covers the island’s Aboriginal and colonial history, including the grim prison era.
Suggested Time to Spend
A day trip (departing early, returning late) lets you cycle a loop, snorkel at two beaches, and see the lighthouse. For a deeper experience, stay overnight at one of the lodges or campsites – two days allow you to explore the less-visited western end, take a guided walking tour, and watch sunset from Cape Vlamingh. Three days is ideal for serious cyclists and snorkelers.
