Timber Creek is a tiny, genuine outback settlement that punches well above its weight for travellers exploring the Kimberley region. Nestled on the banks of the Victoria River, this former gold-rush town offers a raw, unfiltered taste of frontier Australia. With a population that barely reaches triple digits, Timber Creek is all about big skies, red dirt, and a palpable sense of history. It’s the perfect place to stretch your legs between the larger centres of Kununurra and Katherine, and soak up the kind of quiet, star-filled nights you came to the outback for.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers pass through Timber Creek in a day, stopping for a meal and a wander around the museum before heading on. However, to really appreciate the area, consider spending one night. This gives you time to explore Gregory National Park properly, watch the sunset from Pigeon Hole Lookout, and enjoy a cold beer at the Timber Creek Hotel – a classic outback pub with a welcoming vibe. If you’re self-driving, it’s a comfortable break between Kununurra (about 3 hours east) and Katherine (about 3 hours west).
