Timber Creek is a tiny, genuine outback settlement that punches well above its weight for travellers exploring the Kimberley region. Nestled on the banks of the Victoria River, this former gold-rush town offers a raw, unfiltered taste of frontier Australia. With a population that barely reaches triple digits, Timber Creek is all about big skies, red dirt, and a palpable sense of history. It’s the perfect place to stretch your legs between the larger centres of Kununurra and Katherine, and soak up the kind of quiet, star-filled nights you came to the outback for.
Highlights & What to See
- Victoria River Crossing – The historic crossing point is a great spot to watch the river flow past. Look out for freshwater crocodiles basking on the banks and birdlife along the water’s edge.
- Timber Creek Historical Museum – Housed in the original police station, this small museum is packed with artefacts from the gold rush era and early pastoral days. It’s a quick, insightful stop that brings the town’s past to life.
- Pigeon Hole Lookout – A short drive from town, this lookout offers sweeping views over the Victoria River valley. It’s especially beautiful at sunset when the light turns the escarpments a deep ochre.
- Gregory National Park – The town is the gateway to this vast, underrated national park. Drive the escarpment loop for panoramic views, explore the limestone gorges, and keep an eye out for wallabies and euros.
- Bullita Homestead & Stockyards – Within Gregory National Park, this historic homestead complex gives a glimpse into the harsh life of early cattle stations. The nearby walk through the limestone karst landscape is a highlight.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pass through Timber Creek in a day, stopping for a meal and a wander around the museum before heading on. However, to really appreciate the area, consider spending one night. This gives you time to explore Gregory National Park properly, watch the sunset from Pigeon Hole Lookout, and enjoy a cold beer at the Timber Creek Hotel – a classic outback pub with a welcoming vibe. If you’re self-driving, it’s a comfortable break between Kununurra (about 3 hours east) and Katherine (about 3 hours west).
