Litchfield National Park is a stunning natural escape just a 90-minute drive from Darwin, offering a refreshing alternative to the more famous Kakadu. With its cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear plunge pools, and ancient termite mounds, this park is a paradise for swimmers, hikers, and nature lovers. The sealed roads make it easily accessible for self-drive travellers, and the dry season (May to October) is the ideal time to visit.
Highlights & What to See
- Florence Falls – A dramatic double waterfall plunging into a deep, inviting pool; take the stairs down for a refreshing swim.
- Wangli Falls – One of the park's most iconic spots, with a wide curtain of water and a large swimming hole surrounded by monsoon forest.
- Buley Rockholes – A series of natural rock pools connected by small cascades, perfect for a lazy afternoon soak.
- Termite Mounds – Marvel at the towering cathedral and magnetic termite mounds scattered across the landscape, especially along the termite mound walk.
- Tolmer Falls – A spectacular waterfall that drops over a sandstone escarpment; the lookout offers sweeping views (no swimming allowed to protect the resident ghost bats).
- Lost City – A surreal landscape of weathered sandstone pillars that resemble an ancient ruin, accessible via a short 4WD track.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find one full day sufficient to hit the highlights, but two days allow a more relaxed pace, including a hike or two and a picnic lunch. Start early to beat the crowds at the popular swimming holes, and consider staying overnight at one of the park's campgrounds or nearby lodges to experience the sunset over the escarpment.
