Katherine, a vibrant outback town on the banks of the Katherine River, is the gateway to the stunning Nitmiluk National Park and a must-stop on any Kimberley self-drive itinerary. With a rich Indigenous heritage and a laid-back frontier vibe, it offers a blend of natural wonders, cultural experiences, and modern comforts that make it an ideal base for exploring the region.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge – A series of 13 dramatic sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River. Explore by canoe, cruise, or scenic flight; the first gorge is easily accessible, while the upper gorges reveal deeper wilderness.
- Katherine Hot Springs – Natural thermal springs right in town, perfect for a relaxing soak after a day of hiking. The crystal-clear, 32°C water flows into rock pools surrounded by pandanus palms.
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park – A tropical limestone cave system with guided tours through ancient formations, home to rare ghost bats and orange leaf-nosed bats.
- Katherine Outback Heritage Museum – Housed in a historic railway station, this museum tells the story of the region’s Indigenous cultures, pastoral history, and WWII connections.
- Springvale Homestead – A heritage-listed station offering a glimpse into 19th-century outback life, plus a popular restaurant and bar.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two full days to experience the gorge and other highlights. A day trip from Darwin is possible but rushed; overnighting allows for a dawn canoe on the gorge or an evening at the hot springs. Add an extra day if you want to explore the upper gorges or take a scenic flight over the Kimberley escarpments.
