Katherine, a vibrant outback town on the banks of the Katherine River, is the gateway to the stunning Nitmiluk National Park and a must-stop on any Kimberley self-drive itinerary. With a rich Indigenous heritage and a laid-back frontier vibe, it offers a blend of natural wonders, cultural experiences, and modern comforts that make it an ideal base for exploring the region.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least two full days to experience the gorge and other highlights. A day trip from Darwin is possible but rushed; overnighting allows for a dawn canoe on the gorge or an evening at the hot springs. Add an extra day if you want to explore the upper gorges or take a scenic flight over the Kimberley escarpments.
