East Point Reserve is a sprawling coastal park on the outskirts of Darwin, offering a mix of natural bushland, beaches, and military history. It's a favorite spot for locals to unwind, with walking trails, picnic areas, and sweeping views over the Timor Sea. The reserve is also home to the Darwin Military Museum and a large population of wallabies that emerge at dusk.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Alexander – A man-made saltwater swimming lagoon, perfect for a safe dip away from crocodile risks. Surrounded by grassy lawns and shaded picnic spots.
- Darwin Military Museum – Explore WWII history through outdoor displays of artillery, tanks, and the preserved oil tunnels used as bomb shelters.
- East Point Walking Trail – A 2.5 km coastal loop through monsoon forest and mangroves, with interpretive signs about local flora and Indigenous culture.
- Wallaby Spotting at Dusk – Agile wallabies graze freely across the lawns as the sun sets – bring a camera but keep your distance.
- Lookout Platform – Panoramic views of Darwin Harbour, especially stunning at sunset with the city skyline in the distance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal: spend a couple of hours walking the trails and visiting the museum, then cool off at Lake Alexander. If you're short on time, a sunset visit (around 1–2 hours) lets you catch the wallabies and the harbour views. Combine with a morning at the nearby Mindil Beach markets for a full day out.
