About 27 kilometres south of Katherine, Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park offers a cool escape into a subterranean world of ancient limestone formations. Named from the Jawoyn word for 'many stars' (a reference to the glow-worms that speckle the cave ceilings), this living cave system is a mesmerising blend of geology and Indigenous heritage. The guided tours are led by knowledgeable rangers who bring the caves' 500-million-year-old story to life, sharing insights about the delicate ecosystem, the significance to the Jawoyn people, and the fascinating stalactites, stalagmites, and helictites that adorn the chambers.
Highlights & What to See
- Guided Cave Tour: The only way to explore the caves, these 45-minute tours wind through well-lit chambers where you’ll see the 'Cathedral', 'Frozen Waterfall', and glow-worms twinkling in the dark.
- Glow-Worms: These bioluminescent larvae are the caves' star attraction – the ranger will dim the lights so you can appreciate their starry effect.
- Nature Walk: Above ground, a short self-guided loop leads through monsoon vine forest and limestone outcrops, where you might spot wallabies, birds, and native orchids.
- Bat Colony: Listen for the rustle of the orange leaf-nosed bats that roost in the caves – a key part of the cave ecosystem.
- Interpretive Centre: Small but informative, with displays on cave formation, local wildlife, and Jawoyn culture.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours to combine the guided cave tour (which runs on the hour) and a leisurely stroll on the nature walk. The caves are a perfect half-day stop from Katherine, especially if you time your visit for the cooler morning or late afternoon. Note that tours are limited and can fill up, so arriving early is wise. The site is closed during the wet season (typically November to March) for safety reasons.
