Nestled along the turquoise coast of Western Australia, Coral Bay is a tiny coastal settlement that punches far above its weight as a marine playground. With its powdery white sand and the world-heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef mere metres offshore, this is a place where you can step from the beach straight into one of the planet’s most vibrant coral gardens. It’s laid-back, sun-drenched, and utterly captivating — the kind of spot where days blur into a blissful rhythm of snorkelling, wildlife encounters, and spectacular sunsets.
Highlights & What to See
- Snorkel the Ningaloo Reef — Wade straight into the water from the main beach to find kaleidoscopic corals, turtles, and colourful fish. For a true spectacle, join a tour to swim alongside whale sharks (March–July) or manta rays (year-round).
- Boat tours to Ningaloo’s outer reef — Hop on a half-day or full-day excursion to explore deeper drop-offs, coral bommies, and the chance to spot dolphins and dugongs.
- Bill’s Bay & The Point — Two picture-perfect coves just a short walk or kayak from the town centre, offering calm, crystal-clear waters ideal for families and beginner snorkellers.
- Bateman Bay — A quieter stretch of sand a few minutes’ drive south, perfect for a peaceful picnic and a dip away from the small crowds.
- Sunset at the Coral Bay foreshore — Grab a takeaway from the local bakery and watch the sky turn shades of orange and pink over the reef.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three nights is the sweet spot for Coral Bay. With one full day you can snorkel the reef right off the beach, take a whale shark or manta ray tour, and still have time to relax. A second day allows you to explore nearby beaches, kayak, or join a glass-bottom boat tour. If you’re self-driving, consider it a perfect two-night stop between Exmouth and the gorges of the Kimberley.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Exmouth — 150 km north, with its own stretch of Ningaloo Reef, the Cape Range National Park, and the historic Vlamingh Head Lighthouse.
- Cape Range National Park — Dramatic limestone ranges, gorges, and secluded beaches like Turquoise Bay and Osprey Bay, all just a short drive from Exmouth.
- Ningaloo Marine Park — The entire reef system; Coral Bay is the southern gateway, while Exmouth accesses the northern section.
- Learmonth — A tiny settlement with an airfield and the eerie wreck of the SS Mildura, a historic shipwreck visible at low tide.
- Karijini National Park — About 400 km inland, this red-rock gorge country is a spectacular contrast to the coast, with swimming holes and waterfalls.
