Bell Gorge is a stunning natural amphitheatre in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, where a cascading waterfall plunges into a deep, emerald pool. This is one of the most photogenic and accessible gorges in the region, offering a rewarding hike and a refreshing swim in a spectacular setting. The surrounding landscape of rugged red cliffs and spinifex grass is quintessentially Kimberley, and the gorge itself feels like a hidden paradise.
Highlights & What to See
- Bell Gorge Waterfall & Pool: The main attraction – a multi-tiered waterfall that drops into a large, clear swimming hole. The water is cool and inviting, especially after the hike.
- Scenic Lookout: A short walk from the car park offers panoramic views over the gorge and the surrounding bushland. Perfect for photos, especially in the late afternoon light.
- Hike to the Base of the Falls: A moderately challenging 2km (return) trail that descends into the gorge via rocky steps. The path is well-defined but requires sturdy footwear and some scrambling.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for red-tailed black cockatoos, rainbow bee-eaters, and other Kimberley birdlife around the gorge edges.
- Wildflowers (June–August): During the dry season, the bushland around the gorge bursts into colour with native wildflowers, including grevilleas and wattles.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least half a day at Bell Gorge. The hike down and back takes about 1–1.5 hours, but you'll want to allow extra time for swimming, relaxing by the pool, and taking photos. If you're combining it with other attractions in the region, starting early in the morning is best to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Many travellers visit as a day trip from Derby or Broome, or as part of a longer self-drive itinerary through the Kimberley.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Broome: The gateway to the Kimberley, with Cable Beach, pearl history, and vibrant markets – about 3.5 hours west.
- Derby: A historic town with the famous Boab Prison Tree and a great base for exploring the region – about 2 hours north-west.
