Rising abruptly from the volcanic plains southwest of Melbourne, the You Yangs are a distinctive granite outcrop that has been a landmark for Wadawurrung people for millennia. Today, this regional park offers a fantastic mix of bushwalking, mountain biking, and sweeping views across the basalt plains to the sea. It’s a refreshing half-day escape from the city, where the natural landscape feels wild and ancient, yet is easily accessible by car.
Highlights & What to See
- Flinders Peak Walk: A steep but rewarding 2 km return hike to the highest point, offering 360-degree views of the plains, Geelong, and on clear days, the Melbourne skyline.
- Mountain Bike Trails: The You Yangs are a mecca for mountain bikers, with over 30 km of purpose-built trails ranging from easy (family-friendly) to advanced (black diamond).
- Aboriginal Cultural Sites: Look for scar trees and rock shelters used by the Wadawurrung people; interpretive signs along the Big Rock Walk explain their significance.
- Rock Climbing: The granite boulders and cliffs offer excellent climbing, with routes for all abilities. The Turntable area is a popular spot.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for eastern grey kangaroos, echidnas, and a variety of birdlife, including wedge-tailed eagles soaring above the peaks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal: arrive in the morning to tackle the Flinders Peak Walk (allow 1–1.5 hours return), then spend another hour exploring the base trails or enjoying a picnic. If you’re a mountain biker, plan for 2–4 hours to ride a selection of trails. The park is compact enough to combine with a morning at nearby Sovereign Hill in Ballarat or a winery visit in the Geelong wine region.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
