High above the damp, fern-laced floor of the Great Otway National Park, Otway Treetop Adventures offers a bird’s-eye perspective on one of Victoria’s most ancient rainforests. This isn’t just a walk in the trees — it’s a series of suspended walkways, zip-lines, and high-ropes courses that let you glide between towering mountain ash and myrtle beech. The air smells of eucalyptus and damp earth, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot a lyrebird scratching in the understorey below. It’s a perfect half-day escape for families, nature lovers, and adrenaline seekers alike, and it slots neatly into a self-drive itinerary along the Great Ocean Road or from Ballarat.
Highlights & What to See
- Treetop Walk: A gentle, wheelchair-accessible elevated boardwalk that weaves through the canopy at 30 metres high. Look down through the mesh to the forest floor and listen for the whip-crack call of the eastern whipbird.
- Zip-Line Course: A series of eight zip-lines that send you flying between platforms, with views over the valley and the chance to race a friend side-by-side on the final line.
- High Ropes Adventure: A more challenging circuit of rope bridges, wobbly logs, and cargo nets suspended among the trees. Great for older kids and adults who want to test their balance.
- Night Walks: On selected evenings, the walkway stays open after dark. With only a small torch, you’ll see possums, glow-worms, and the eerie glow of bioluminescent fungi.
- Interpretive Signs: Scattered along the walk, they explain the ecology of the Otways — how the trees support entire ecosystems, and why this cool-temperate rainforest is a rare gem.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here, which is enough to do the Treetop Walk and one of the adventure courses. If you’re combining the zip-line with the high ropes, budget a full half-day (3–4 hours). The site is best visited in the morning when the forest is most active, or in the late afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds. You can easily pair it with a stop at the nearby Maits Rest rainforest walk or a visit to the Cape Otway Lightstation on the same day.
