Mount Macedon, a volcanic peak rising 1,001 metres above the Central Highlands, is a lush, cool-climate escape just an hour north-west of Melbourne. Its historic gardens, ferny gullies and sweeping views make it a favourite for day-trippers and road-trippers weaving through the Goldfields region. In autumn, the village blazes with European deciduous trees; in spring, rhododendrons and camellias steal the show.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Macedon Memorial Cross & Summit Lookout – Climb to the cross for panoramic views over the Great Dividing Range and, on clear days, all the way to Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay. The short summit walk is steep but rewarding.
- Forest Glade Gardens – A privately owned, four-hectare wonderland of themed gardens (Japanese, woodland, rhododendron) that feels like a secret English estate. Open seasonally; check ahead.
- Mount Macedon Regional Park – Lace up your boots for the Sanctuary Loop Walk (2.2 km) through towering mountain ash and tree ferns, or tackle the longer Camels Hump Track for solitude and birdlife.
- Historic Gardens – Peek into grand 19th-century estates like Alton, Boola and Duneira (private, but visible from the road), whose gardens are open during the annual Mount Macedon Garden Fair.
- Hanging Rock – A 15-minute drive north, this volcanic formation (famous from Picnic at Hanging Rock) offers eerie rock formations, walking trails and a café.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can see the summit and one garden in a half-day, but a full day allows you to explore two gardens, do a walk and visit Hanging Rock. For a relaxed pace, overnight in the village or nearby Macedon – the town has a handful of B&Bs and a cosy pub. If you’re self-driving the Goldfields loop, Mount Macedon works well as a morning stop before heading to Daylesford or Bendigo.
