Straddling the Great Dividing Range between Castlemaine and Maldon, Mount Alexander Regional Park is a rugged bushland escape that rewards walkers, mountain bikers and history buffs with granite outcrops, gold-rush relics and sweeping views over the Central Goldfields. The park’s eucalypt forests and wildflower-covered slopes feel a world away from Ballarat’s tourist trail, yet it’s an easy 45-minute drive north — perfect for a half-day immersion in Victoria’s gold-mining landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Alexander Summit Walk: A steep but rewarding 2.5 km return climb to the 744 m summit, where panoramic views stretch from the Pyrenees to the Cobbler Range. Go early for the best light and a chance to spot wedge-tailed eagles.
- Leviathan Gold Mine: Explore the remnants of one of the region’s richest deep-lead gold mines — interpretive signs explain the 1850s mining techniques, and you can peer into the dark shaft (from a safe distance).
- Muckleford Forest Loop: A 15 km mountain-bike trail that winds through box-ironbark forest and past abandoned mullock heaps. The undulating terrain suits intermediate riders.
- Granite Boulders & Wildflowers: The park’s distinctive granite tors are a playground for scramblers. In spring, the understorey explodes with golden wattles, pink heath and bluebells.
- Maldon & Castlemaine Gateways: The heritage towns on either side of the park offer gold-rush architecture, artisan bakeries and antiques — don’t miss the Maldon Neighbourhood Centre’s homemade scones.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 3–4 hours on the summit walk and a quick mine-site visit. If you plan to mountain-bike the Muckleford Loop or combine a picnic with wildflower-spotting, allow a full day. The park is best visited from late spring to early autumn (October–April) when days are mild and tracks are dry; winter can bring muddy sections and chilly winds on the summit.
