Just a 40-minute drive west of Ballarat, the Great Western wine region is a hidden gem of Victoria's cool-climate viticulture. Famous for its limestone-rich soils and historic underground cellars, this pocket of the Grampians wine zone produces standout shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, and sparkling wines. The landscape is quintessentially Australian – golden paddocks, eucalypt-fringed ridges, and the ghosts of gold-rush-era winemaking. Whether you're a serious oenophile or just love a good glass with a view, Great Western's cellar doors offer intimate tastings, behind-the-scenes tours, and a genuine sense of place.
Highlights & What to See
- Seppelt Great Western – The region's most iconic producer, with a historic underground 'drives' where sparkling wine is aged in deep limestone tunnels. The tour here is a must, revealing over a century of winemaking history.

Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day to explore the Great Western wineries at a relaxed pace. Start mid-morning at Seppelt for the underground tour (allow 1.5 hours), then head to Best's for a tasting and lunch (the region has several excellent winery restaurants). In the afternoon, visit one or two smaller producers like Grampians Estate or Mount Langi Ghiran. If you're keen on history, tack on a quick stop at the Great Western Historical Cellars. The region is compact enough that you can comfortably visit 3–4 cellar doors without feeling rushed.
