Ararat, a gold-rush town with a fascinating Chinese-Australian heritage, sits on the western edge of the Grampians region. Its name derives from a biblical reference, but the town's story is deeply tied to the thousands of Chinese miners who arrived during the 1850s gold rushes. Today, Ararat offers a blend of history, culture, and proximity to some of Victoria's best natural attractions.
Highlights & What to See
- Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre – An award-winning museum that vividly tells the story of Chinese immigrants on the goldfields, with immersive exhibits and a recreated miners' camp.
- J Ward Museum – A former lunatic asylum turned museum, offering a spine-tingling glimpse into 19th-century mental health care. Guided tours are both informative and chilling.
- Ararat Railway Station & Historical Precinct – A beautifully preserved Victorian-era station, with the nearby Ararat Regional Art Gallery showcasing local and touring exhibitions.
- Grampians National Park – Just a short drive south, the Grampians offer spectacular hiking, waterfalls, and Aboriginal rock art sites. Key spots include the Pinnacle lookout and MacKenzie Falls.
- Langi Morgala Museum – Housed in the former Shire Hall, this museum displays local history, including gold-mining artifacts and a replica of a miner's cottage.
- Mount Langi Ghiran – A granite peak offering panoramic views of the region; it's a popular spot for hiking and birdwatching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Ararat deserves at least a full day to explore its main museums and heritage sites. If you're using it as a base for the Grampians, allow two to three days to combine town history with national park walks. A half-day is enough for a quick visit to Gum San and J Ward, but the surrounding landscapes reward a longer stay.
