Rolling hills, rugged mountain backdrops and a cool climate that produces some of Victoria's most distinctive red wines define the Pyrenees Wine Region. Tucked between Ballarat and the Grampians, this is a landscape of sweeping vineyards, historic goldrush towns and a relaxed, unhurried pace. For travellers who love good wine, good food and wide-open spaces, the Pyrenees delivers an authentic taste of regional Victoria.
Highlights & What to See
- Wine Tasting at Boutique Cellar Doors — The region is famed for its shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir. Don't miss Dalwhinnie, Mount Avoca and Blue Pyrenees Estate, each with stunning vineyard views and knowledgeable hosts.
- Avoca — A charming gold-era town with antique shops, a historic railway station and the Avoca River. Perfect for a stroll between tastings.
- Grampians National Park — Just west, the dramatic sandstone peaks offer superb hiking, Aboriginal rock art sites and lookouts like the Pinnacle and Boroka Lookout.
- Halls Gap — The gateway to the Grampians, with wildlife parks, waterfalls and easy walking trails. Spot kangaroos at dusk.
- Local Produce & Dining — Many wineries have excellent restaurants. Try the seasonal menu at Mount Avoca or a platter at Redbank Winery.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least a full day to explore the wine region properly. If you're based in Ballarat, it's an easy day trip, but to really soak up the atmosphere and visit a handful of cellar doors, consider an overnight stay in Avoca or a nearby vineyard accommodation. Two days gives you time to combine wine tasting with a walk in the Grampians.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
