Just an hour west of Melbourne, Brisbane Ranges National Park is a hidden gem of bushland, wildflowers, and dramatic rocky ridges. This park offers a peaceful escape into nature, with excellent hiking, birdwatching, and sweeping views over the plains. It's a favorite among locals for a quick dose of wilderness without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Anakie Gorge Walk – A scenic 4.5 km loop along Stoney Creek, through river red gums and past a historic weir. Look for platypus at dusk.
- Brisbane Ranges Lookout – Panoramic views across the Werribee Valley to the You Yangs and Port Phillip Bay. Best at sunrise or late afternoon.
- Wildflowers in Spring – The park bursts into colour with orchids, wattles, and grevilleas. The heathlands are particularly spectacular from August to November.
- Birdwatching – Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles, gang-gang cockatoos, and the elusive pilotbird. The park is a haven for birders.
- Steiglitz Historic Park – Adjacent to the national park, this former gold-mining town has preserved buildings, a cemetery, and a short heritage walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the main lookout and a short walk like the Anakie Gorge loop. For a full experience, plan a full day to tackle longer trails such as the 12 km Brisbane Ranges Circuit, which takes in several viewpoints and the historic Steiglitz area. Pack a picnic – there are shaded tables near the Anakie Gorge car park.
