Perched on the edge of the Otway Ranges, Beech Forest is a sleepy hamlet that feels a world away from the gold-rush bustle of Ballarat. Named for the magnificent myrtle beech trees that cloak the surrounding hills, this pocket of Victoria is all about slow immersion in temperate rainforest, cool-climate produce, and the kind of quiet that lets you hear your own heartbeat. The drive here from Ballarat winds through rolling farmland and sudden plunges into ferny gullies, setting the tone for a place that rewards those who linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Great Otway National Park – Beech Forest is the gateway to the park’s northern section, where you can walk among towering mountain ash and myrtle beech on the Beach Forest Rainforest Walk, a short boardwalk loop through moss-draped ancient trees.
- Triplet Falls – A 20-minute drive south, these three-tiered cascades plunge into a deep fern gully; the elevated boardwalk offers eye-level views of the falls and the surrounding canopy.
- Beech Forest Honey – The region’s leatherwood and manuka honey is legendary. Stop by the local producers for tastings and jars to take home.
- Otway Estate Brewery & Distillery – Just outside town, this family-run operation serves craft beers, ciders, and gins alongside wood-fired pizzas, with sweeping views over the rolling hills.
- Redwoods of the Otways – A surreal grove of towering Californian redwoods planted in the 1930s, now a serene walk through these gentle giants near the town of Beech Forest.
Suggested Time to Spend
Beech Forest itself is tiny, so plan for a half-day to a full day to explore the surrounding national park and nearby waterfalls. If you’re keen on walking the longer trails (like the 7 km loop to Hopetoun Falls), allocate a full day. Many visitors treat it as a scenic detour on the way from Ballarat to the Great Ocean Road, but overnighting at one of the cosy B&Bs or farm stays lets you experience the forest at dawn and dusk when the wildlife – wallabies, lyrebirds, and glow-worms – is most active.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ballarat – The historic gold-rush city is an easy 1.5-hour drive north, with Sovereign Hill, Lake Wendouree, and excellent cafes worth a day or two.
- Port Campbell & the Great Ocean Road – Continue south to the dramatic limestone cliffs and the Twelve Apostles, about 90 minutes away via scenic forest roads.
- Lorne – A classic seaside town with a lively arts scene and great surf beaches, reachable via the Great Ocean Road or through the Otways.
- Colac – Gateway to the lake district and the start of the Great Ocean Road’s inland route, with a charming main street and nearby crater lakes.
- Otway Fly Treetop Adventures – A 25-minute drive east, this zipline and elevated walkway gets you into the forest canopy for a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest.
