Beech Forest

Perched on the edge of the Otway Ranges, Beech Forest is a sleepy hamlet that feels a world away from the gold-rush bustle of Ballarat. Named for the magnificent myrtle beech trees that cloak the surrounding hills, this pocket of Victoria is all about slow immersion in temperate rainforest, cool-climate produce, and the kind of quiet that lets you hear your own heartbeat. The drive here from Ballarat winds through rolling farmland and sudden plunges into ferny gullies, setting the tone for a place that rewards those who linger.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Beech Forest itself is tiny, so plan for a half-day to a full day to explore the surrounding national park and nearby waterfalls. If you’re keen on walking the longer trails (like the 7 km loop to Hopetoun Falls), allocate a full day. Many visitors treat it as a scenic detour on the way from Ballarat to the Great Ocean Road, but overnighting at one of the cosy B&Bs or farm stays lets you experience the forest at dawn and dusk when the wildlife – wallabies, lyrebirds, and glow-worms – is most active.
