The Three Capitals Walk is a magnificent 73-kilometre multi-day trek that connects three of Tasmania's most historic sites: the former colonial capitals of Launceston, George Town, and the now-vanished settlement of York Town. This well-marked trail weaves through lush river valleys, coastal heathlands, and quiet country roads, offering a rare blend of natural beauty and convict-era history. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a history buff with a taste for adventure, this walk delivers an authentic slice of Tasmanian heritage.
Highlights & What to See
- Launceston to George Town via the Tamar River: Follow the scenic Tamar River downstream, passing vineyards, wetlands, and the historic Batman Bridge. Keep an eye out for white-bellied sea eagles and black swans.
- York Town Historic Site: Explore the remains of Tasmania's second colonial settlement, established in 1804. Interpretive signs reveal the harsh realities of early convict life amid the bush.
- George Town's Pilot Station: This beautifully preserved 19th-century maritime precinct includes the pilot station, signal station, and a museum housed in the original buildings. The views across the Tamar Heads are superb.
- Low Head Lighthouse and Penguin Colony: At the walk's northern end, climb the historic lighthouse and, at dusk, watch little penguins waddle ashore at the Low Head Penguin Colony.
- Cataract Gorge: Though not on the official route, this stunning natural gorge in Launceston makes a perfect pre- or post-walk excursion, with its swimming basin and suspended footbridge.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers allow three to four days to complete the Three Capitals Walk, covering 18–25 kilometres per day. The terrain is mostly flat to undulating, making it a moderate challenge. Break the journey with overnight stops at George Town (Day 2) and the York Town area (Day 3). If you prefer a more leisurely pace, add an extra day to explore George Town's museums and the Low Head lighthouse. For a shorter taste, the sections between Launceston and the Batman Bridge are ideal for a day hike.
