Alum Cliffs is a striking geological formation on the outskirts of Launceston, where the South Esk River has carved a dramatic gorge through ancient dolerite. The cliffs glow in warm hues during late afternoon, making it a photographer's dream. A short, well-maintained walking track leads to a lookout platform with vertiginous views over the river and the surrounding bushland. It's a peaceful spot that feels a world away from the city centre, yet it's only a 10-minute drive from Launceston's CBD.
Highlights & What to See
- Alum Cliffs Lookout – The main viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramas of the gorge and the South Esk River winding below. On clear days, you can see all the way to the Tamar Valley.
- Walking Track – A 1.5 km return walk (about 30 minutes) through dry eucalypt forest. The path is mostly flat and well-graded, suitable for most fitness levels. Keep an eye out for native birds and wallabies.
- Geology – The cliffs are composed of Jurassic dolerite, formed by volcanic activity over 170 million years ago. The orange and red stains on the rock are from iron oxide, giving the cliffs their distinctive colour.
- Picnic Area – There's a small grassy area near the car park with a couple of tables, perfect for a quiet lunch with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes here, including the walk and time at the lookout. If you're combining it with a visit to Cataract Gorge (just 5 minutes away by car), you can easily loop both in a half-day morning or afternoon. Sunset is the best time for lighting, but the track closes at dusk so plan accordingly.
