Alum Cliffs is a striking geological formation on the outskirts of Launceston, where the South Esk River has carved a dramatic gorge through ancient dolerite. The cliffs glow in warm hues during late afternoon, making it a photographer's dream. A short, well-maintained walking track leads to a lookout platform with vertiginous views over the river and the surrounding bushland. It's a peaceful spot that feels a world away from the city centre, yet it's only a 10-minute drive from Launceston's CBD.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes here, including the walk and time at the lookout. If you're combining it with a visit to Cataract Gorge (just 5 minutes away by car), you can easily loop both in a half-day morning or afternoon. Sunset is the best time for lighting, but the track closes at dusk so plan accordingly.
