Straddling the border between New South Wales and Queensland, the Tweed Valley is a lush, volcanic landscape that feels a world away from the Gold Coast high-rises just to the north. This is a place of ancient calderas, World Heritage rainforest, and a laid-back food-and-drink scene that thrives on local produce. Whether you're hiking through Gondwana-era forests, kayaking the serene Tweed River, or sipping a cold beer at a farmgate brewery, the valley rewards those who slow down and soak it in.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Warning (Wollumbin): The remnant core of an ancient volcano, this sacred peak offers a challenging pre-dawn hike rewarded by the first rays of sun on mainland Australia. Check access conditions before you go, as the summit track is currently closed for cultural reasons; the surrounding national park walks are open.
- Nightcap National Park: Home to the spectacular Minyon Falls, a 100-metre plunge into a rainforest gorge. The walk to the lookout is easy, and the longer loop trail takes you through towering eucalypts and palms.
- Tweed River & Tweed Heads: Explore the river by kayak or stand-up paddleboard, or simply enjoy the coastal vibe at Tweed Heads, where the river meets the sea. The nearby Point Danger lookout offers panoramic views from the border.
- Farmgate produce & breweries: The valley is dotted with macadamia orchards, banana plantations, and artisan food producers. Don't miss the Tweed Valley Farmgate Trail — sample local cheese, honey, and craft beer at spots like Husk Distillery and The Brewery at the Farm.
- Uki & the arts scene: This tiny village at the foot of Mount Warning is a hub for artists, musicians, and alternative lifestylers. Visit on a Sunday for the Uki Community Markets, where you'll find handmade crafts, live music, and organic eats.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the Tweed Valley at least two to three days to do it justice. Use one day for a dawn hike or rainforest walk, another for river activities and farmgate hopping, and a third to explore the coastal end around Tweed Heads and Kingscliff. The valley is compact enough that you can base yourself in a central spot like Murwillumbah and cover the highlights without rushing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Gold Coast: Just 30 minutes north, the glitzy Gold Coast offers beaches, theme parks, and a buzzing dining scene — a stark contrast to the valley's rural calm.
- Byron Bay: An hour south, this iconic surf town is famous for its lighthouse, beaches, and bohemian energy. Combine for a classic NSW north-coast road trip.
- Lamington National Park: A bit further west, this World Heritage-listed park offers ancient Antarctic beech forests, tree-top walks, and superb birdwatching.
- Springbrook National Park: Part of the same Gondwana rainforest reserve, Springbrook has dramatic lookouts, waterfalls, and glow-worm caves — an easy day trip from the valley.
