Stradbroke Island

Stradbroke Island—actually two islands, North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) and South Stradbroke Island—is a wild, sandy paradise just a short ferry ride from Brisbane. With its turquoise freshwater lakes, dramatic sand dunes, and uncrowded surf beaches, it feels a world away from the mainland. The island is a place of deep Indigenous significance, home to the Quandamooka people, and offers a rare chance to experience a laid-back coastal lifestyle where kangaroos hop along the beach and humpbacks breach offshore.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors find two to three days ideal to soak up the island's highlights without rushing. Arrive early on day one to explore Point Lookout and swim in Brown Lake; spend the second day on Main Beach or hiking the gorge. If you have a third day, consider a boat trip to South Stradbroke for camping or a picnic. The ferry from Brisbane takes about 25 minutes, making it easy to do as a day trip, but staying overnight lets you experience the island's magical sunsets and starry skies.
