Tablelands

Rising abruptly from the coastal humidity, the Atherton Tablelands offer a cool, green escape into Queensland’s fertile volcanic highlands. Here, misty rainforests give way to rolling dairy pastures, cascading waterfalls plunge into ancient crater lakes, and the air is scented with coffee and avocados. This is a place to slow down, explore winding back roads, and discover a side of tropical North Queensland that feels a world away from the reef.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To properly experience the Tablelands, plan for at least two full days – this allows you to tackle the waterfall circuit, explore a crater lake, and visit Yungaburra without rushing. If you’re short on time, a long day trip from Cairns is possible, but you’ll miss the early-morning wildlife and the chance to linger over a farm-fresh lunch. For a deeper immersion, add a third day to explore Undara or hike in the misty Mount Hypipamee National Park.
