Nitmiluk National Park, carved by the ancient Katherine River, is a dramatic landscape of towering sandstone gorges, plunging waterfalls, and lush monsoon forests. Just 30 kilometres from Katherine, this Indigenous-owned park offers quintessential Top End experiences — from serene canoe trips on glassy waters to heart-pumping helicopter flights over the chasm. It's a place where the 40,000-year-old stories of the Jawoyn people pulse through the red cliffs, and the sheer scale of the gorge system (13 in total) will leave you awestruck.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day exploring the gorge by boat or canoe, adding a short walk to a lookout. To really soak it in — including a hike to Edith Falls and a scenic flight — budget two days. The park is at its best in the dry season (May to September), when the weather is perfect for outdoor activities; in the wet season, many walks close but the waterfalls are at their most powerful.
