Nitmiluk National Park, carved by the ancient Katherine River, is a dramatic landscape of towering sandstone gorges, plunging waterfalls, and lush monsoon forests. Just 30 kilometres from Katherine, this Indigenous-owned park offers quintessential Top End experiences — from serene canoe trips on glassy waters to heart-pumping helicopter flights over the chasm. It's a place where the 40,000-year-old stories of the Jawoyn people pulse through the red cliffs, and the sheer scale of the gorge system (13 in total) will leave you awestruck.
Highlights & What to See
- Cruise or canoe the Katherine Gorge — the most iconic way to experience the park. A two-hour boat tour takes you through the first two gorges, while hiring a canoe lets you paddle at your own pace, often spotting freshwater crocodiles basking on the banks.
- Walk the Jatbula Trail — a 58 km, 5-day trek that's one of Australia's great walks, passing waterfalls, rock art sites, and swimming holes. For day-trippers, the 3.4 km Baruwei Lookout walk offers a stunning panorama.
- Swim in natural plunge pools — Leliyn (Edith Falls), a series of cascading pools at the park's northern end, is perfect for a cool-off after a hike. Check local conditions, as some areas close after heavy rain.
- Helicopter scenic flight — for the ultimate perspective, a 30-minute flight swoops over the entire gorge system, revealing the depth and scale of the escarpment.
- Jawoyn rock art at Nabilil — a short, steep walk leads to a gallery of ancient paintings depicting creation ancestors, best visited with a guide from the Nitmiluk cultural tours.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the gorge by boat or canoe, adding a short walk to a lookout. To really soak it in — including a hike to Edith Falls and a scenic flight — budget two days. The park is at its best in the dry season (May to September), when the weather is perfect for outdoor activities; in the wet season, many walks close but the waterfalls are at their most powerful.
