Litchfield National Park, a stunning 1,500-square-kilometre reserve in the Northern Territory, is a top day trip from Darwin. Famous for its cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear swimming holes, and dramatic termite mounds, the park offers a quintessential Top End experience. Unlike its more famous neighbour Kakadu, Litchfield is compact and easily explored in a day, making it a favourite for travellers seeking accessible natural beauty without the long drives.
Highlights & What to See
- Florence Falls & Buley Rockhole – A spectacular double-drop waterfall plunging into a deep pool, with a series of natural plunge pools (Buley Rockhole) just downstream – perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day.
- Wangli Falls – One of the park's most iconic spots, where you can swim in the plunge pool year-round (except during the wet season when crocs may be present). The walk to the top offers panoramic views.
- Termite Mounds – Litchfield is home to enormous magnetic termite mounds, some up to 2 metres tall, aligned north-south to regulate temperature. The nearby interpretive boardwalk explains their fascinating structure.
- Tabletop Swamp & Walker Creek – A serene area for birdwatching and spotting wallabies, with easy walking trails through monsoon forest and paperbark swamps.
- Lost City – A surreal landscape of weathered sandstone pillars that resemble ancient ruins, accessible via a 4WD-only track – a photographer's dream at sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day (8–10 hours) from Darwin, which allows time to see the main waterfalls, swim at a couple of spots, and explore the termite mounds. If you're short on time, a half-day can cover Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole, but you'll miss the park's diversity. For a relaxed pace, consider camping overnight at one of the park's campgrounds (book ahead in dry season).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kuranda – A charming village in the rainforest hinterland, known for its markets, butterfly sanctuary, and scenic railway – a great contrast to Litchfield's rugged landscapes.
- Cairns Esplanade – The vibrant waterfront in Cairns, with a lagoon, restaurants, and easy access to the Great Barrier Reef – perfect to relax after your outback adventure.
- Darwin – The capital of the Northern Territory, offering a mix of history, multicultural food, and a gateway to Kakadu and Litchfield – combine with a few days in the Top End.
- Kakadu National Park – Australia's largest national park, with ancient rock art, wetlands, and abundant wildlife – a longer trip (2–3 days) pairs well with Litchfield.
