Hermannsburg, a historic Lutheran mission settlement 130 km west of Alice Springs, is a captivating blend of Indigenous Arrernte culture and European heritage. The red-earth landscape, dotted with ghost gums and the Finke River, sets the scene for a journey into the heart of the Western MacDonnell Ranges. This is where renowned watercolourist Albert Namatjira lived and painted, and today you can explore his legacy alongside the community's vibrant arts scene.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the historic precinct and art centre, but to fully appreciate the landscape and perhaps join a guided cultural tour, plan for a full day. If you're self-driving the Larapinta Drive, Hermannsburg makes an excellent lunch stop and overnight stay at the campground or historic cottages. Combine it with a visit to the nearby Palm Valley for a packed two-day itinerary.
