Simpson's Gap is one of the most accessible and photogenic gaps in the West MacDonnell Ranges, a dramatic cleft in the red-rock ramparts that frames a permanent waterhole fringed by ghost gums. Just 18 km west of Alice Springs, it offers a quintessential outback experience—stark desert beauty, surprising wildlife, and a sense of ancient stillness that has drawn travellers for generations.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the main walking track and waterhole. If you're keen on the Cassia Hill Lookout or want to linger for wildlife watching, allow half a day. The gap is a perfect stop on a self-drive itinerary along Larapinta Drive, and many travellers combine it with a sunrise or sunset visit for the best light.
