Larapinta Drive
Larapinta Drive is the quintessential outback road trip, slicing through the red heart of Australia from Alice Springs to the West MacDonnell Ranges and beyond. This sealed highway unfurls past ancient gorges, ochre cliffs, and desert oak forests, offering a window into Arrernte country and the rugged beauty that defines the Northern Territory. It's less crowded than the Lasseter Highway to Uluru, making it a blissful escape for self-drivers seeking solitude and raw landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- West MacDonnell Ranges – The backbone of the drive, with stunning gaps and gorges like Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ormiston Gorge, perfect for short walks and swimming in permanent waterholes.
- Ochre Pits – A cultural and geological site where Aboriginal people have sourced ochre for thousands of years; the layered colours are mesmerising.
- Glen Helen Gorge – A dramatic cleft in the range where a permanent waterhole reflects the cliffs; it's a top spot for sunset photography.
- Tnorala (Gosses Bluff) – A massive meteorite impact crater visible from a lookout; the surrounding area feels lunar and ancient.
- Hermannsburg Historic Precinct – A former Lutheran mission with well-preserved buildings and a strong connection to the famous watercolourist Albert Namatjira.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days to drive Larapinta Drive out-and-back from Alice Springs, or three days if you want to hike several gorges and camp overnight. The road is sealed and easily doable in a 2WD, but many side tracks (like to Gosses Bluff) require a 4WD. Pacing: morning walks at Simpsons Gap, lunch at Standley Chasm, afternoon at Ormiston Gorge, and sunset at Glen Helen. On day two, head to Hermannsburg and the Ochre Pits before returning to Alice.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – The natural starting point, with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, School of the Air, and the Araluen Cultural Precinct.
- Uluru – A longer detour via the Lasseter Highway, but an iconic must-see for its rock and cultural significance.
- Kings Canyon – The dramatic sandstone canyon in Watarrka National Park, about 3 hours from the western end of Larapinta Drive.
- Finke Gorge National Park – Home to ancient palm trees and 4WD tracks; accessible from Hermannsburg for adventurous travellers.
