Oriston Gorge
Oriston Gorge is a serene pocket of the West MacDonnell Ranges, where red cliffs frame a permanent waterhole that invites a refreshing dip after a dusty outback drive. Less visited than its neighbour Ormiston Gorge, this spot rewards those who make the short detour with an intimate desert oasis experience. The walk from the car park is a gentle 20-minute stroll through spinifex and ghost gums, ending at a tranquil pool where the only sounds are bird calls and the breeze rustling through the gorge.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim at the permanent waterhole – Cool off in the clear, deep pool surrounded by steep quartzite cliffs; it’s one of the best natural swimming spots in the region.
- Short walk to the gorge – The 1.5 km return track is easy and scenic, passing a dry creek bed and offering glimpses of ancient rock formations.
- Birdwatching – Look for zebra finches, spinifex pigeons, and the occasional peregrine falcon soaring above the cliffs.
- Photography at golden hour – Late afternoon light turns the gorge walls a deep ochre, with reflections in the waterhole.
- Picnic by the water – There are shaded tables near the car park; bring your own supplies as there are no facilities beyond basic toilets.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for a relaxing visit. The walk and a swim take about an hour, but you’ll want extra time to soak up the quiet atmosphere. If you’re combining with nearby gorges, a half-day is ample. Arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and to catch the best light.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ormiston Gorge – The larger, more famous neighbour with a longer walking trail and a visitor centre; just a 10-minute drive away.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – Another swimming hole with dramatic geology, about 20 minutes east.
- Serpentine Gorge – A narrow, shaded gorge with a lookout and a short walk (check access as it sometimes closes for maintenance).
- Glen Helen Gorge – A wide, scenic gorge at the western end of the range, perfect for sunset views.
- Redbank Gorge – A remote option for adventurous walkers, about 45 minutes west.
