West Macdonnell National Park
Stretching west from Alice Springs, the West Macdonnell National Park is a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, deep ochre gorges, and ghost gums clinging to rocky creek beds. This is the Red Centre at its most accessible: a series of world-class walks, swimming holes, and sacred sites that feel a world away from the bitumen. The Tjoritja / West MacDonnell Ranges are a living cultural landscape for the Arrernte people, and even a short visit here offers a profound sense of the desert’s raw beauty and deep time.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Gorge: A stunning natural amphitheatre with a permanent waterhole. The 7.5 km Pound Walk circles the gorge and is one of the best day walks in the park. Time it for late afternoon when the walls glow red.
- Simpsons Gap: A short, easy walk leads to a permanent waterhole flanked by sheer cliffs. It’s a prime spot for spotting black-footed rock-wallabies at dawn or dusk.
- Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye): A private reserve within the park, this narrow chasm is less than 1 km from the car park. Visit around midday when the sun strikes the walls and they blaze with fiery colour.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole: A deep, cool waterhole surrounded by red rocks – perfect for a refreshing swim after a walk along the Ellery Creek trail.
- Glen Helen Gorge: At the western end of the park, this gorge is a favourite for photographers. The sheer cliffs and permanent waterhole are especially beautiful in the late afternoon light.
- Larapinta Trail: For serious hikers, the 223 km Larapinta Trail runs the spine of the range. Even a day walk on sections such as the trail from Ormiston Gorge to Mount Sonder (the park’s highest peak) is unforgettable.
Suggested Time to Spend
With a car you can see the main gorges in a full day from Alice Springs, but two days allows you to do a longer walk (like the Ormiston Pound Walk) and soak up the desert atmosphere. Many travellers spend one night camping at Ormiston Gorge or Ellery Creek to catch the sunrise and sunset colours. If you’re planning to tackle part of the Larapinta Trail, budget at least three to five days.
