Watarrka, the Aboriginal name for the region better known as Kings Canyon, is a spectacular chasm carved into the red sandstone of the George Gill Range. This is the heart of the Northern Territory's Red Centre, where sheer 100-metre cliffs plunge into a lush palm-filled gorge. The silence is profound, broken only by the call of a zebra finch or the whisper of the desert wind. For travellers on a self-drive itinerary between Alice Springs and Uluru, Watarrka is the essential pit stop that delivers some of the most dramatic walking in the outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk – A 6 km loop that climbs to the top of the canyon, offering jaw-dropping views of the sheer sandstone walls, the 'Lost City' domes, and the permanent waterhole known as the Garden of Eden. The climb is steep but rewarding, best done early morning to avoid heat.
- Garden of Eden – A surprising oasis of cycads and ferns nestled in a deep cleft of the canyon, fed by a natural spring. A perfect spot to rest and soak in the contrast of green against red rock.
- Kings Creek Station – A working cattle station that offers quad bike tours, camel rides, and helicopter flights over the canyon. It also has a roadhouse with fuel and supplies, crucial for self-drivers.
- Kathleen Springs Walk – An easy 2.6 km return walk to a tranquil spring-fed waterhole, rich in Aboriginal cultural significance. A good option for a shorter walk or when the rim walk is closed due to heat.
- Sunset viewing – The canyon walls glow deep ochre as the sun dips below the horizon. The best vantage is from the carpark near the Kings Canyon Resort.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers allocate a full day to Watarrka. If you're driving from Alice Springs (about 3.5 hours), arrive the previous evening, then tackle the Kings Canyon Rim Walk at dawn. The walk takes 3–4 hours. Spend the afternoon on the Kathleen Springs Walk or a scenic flight. If you're short on time, a half-day is enough for the rim walk and a quick look at the canyon from the lookout. Overnight stays are recommended at Kings Canyon Resort or Kings Creek Station, both offering accommodation and camping.
