Ormiston Gorge and Pound is the jewel of the West MacDonnell Ranges, a dramatic natural amphitheater of red quartzite cliffs that rise above a permanent waterhole. This is the quintessential outback swimming hole, where the contrast of turquoise water against the rust-coloured rock is nothing short of breathtaking. The gorge is a haven for hikers, wildlife watchers, and anyone seeking a cool dip after a long drive through the desert.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim at the Waterhole – The main plunge pool is the heart of the gorge; float on your back and look up at the sheer walls towering overhead.
- Ormiston Pound Walk – A 7.5 km loop that climbs to a lookout over the entire pound, then drops into the sandy, spinifex-filled valley. Allow 3–4 hours.
- Ghost Gum Lookout – A short, steep scramble rewards you with iconic views of the gorge framed by ancient ghost gums.
- Wildlife Spotting – Keep an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies, zebra finches, and peregrine falcons that nest on the cliffs.
- Riparian Walk – An easy 1 km stroll along the creek bed, perfect for birdwatching and photographing the reflections in the water.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal to do the short walks and enjoy a swim. If you're keen on the full Pound Walk, plan for a full day (arrive early to avoid midday heat). Many travellers overnight at the nearby Ormiston Gorge Campground to catch the golden hour light on the cliffs at sunset and sunrise.
