Mereenie Loop
The Mereenie Loop is a spectacular 4WD route that cuts through the heart of the Northern Territory's Red Centre, connecting Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) to Alice Springs via the West MacDonnell Ranges. This unsealed road offers an unforgettable outback adventure, with dramatic desert landscapes, ancient gorges, and a sense of isolation that defines the Australian interior. Access is restricted to 4WD vehicles and requires a permit, which you can obtain from the Tjuwanpa Outstation or online—this is part of the experience, adding to the road's remote allure.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk – Start or end your journey with this iconic 6 km loop, ascending to sheer sandstone cliffs and the lush Garden of Eden, a permanent waterhole hidden in the gorge.
- West MacDonnell Ranges – The loop passes through the western end of this ancient range; stop at Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen Gorge, and Redbank Gorge for swimming, hiking, and spotting black-footed rock-wallabies.
- Tnorala (Gosse Bluff) – A massive meteorite impact crater visible from the road; the site is sacred to the Western Arrernte people and offers a surreal, otherworldly landscape.
- Hermannsburg Historic Precinct – A former Lutheran mission town with well-preserved stone buildings and the gallery of renowned Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira.
- Finke River Crossings – One of the world's oldest rivers; crossing its sandy bed is a quintessential 4WD moment, and the scenery along its banks is starkly beautiful.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least two to three days to drive the Mereenie Loop comfortably, including stops. Most travellers take the full day to drive from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon (or vice versa), with detours to gorges and cultural sites. If you want to hike at Kings Canyon and explore the West Macs, plan for three to four days. The road is corrugated and dusty; allow extra time for slow going, especially after rain. Overnight options include the Kings Canyon Resort, Glen Helen Resort, or camping at designated sites along the route.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – A three-hour drive from Kings Canyon, the red monolith and domes are a must-see; combine the loop with a visit to Uluru for the ultimate Red Centre itinerary.
- Alice Springs – The gateway town offers the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum, the Desert Park, and the Telegraph Station – a good place to stock up before the loop.
- Palm Valley (Finke Gorge National Park) – A side trip from Hermannsburg, this 4WD track leads to a lush oasis of red cabbage palms, unique to the region.
- Simpsons Gap – Just west of Alice Springs, this gap in the West Macs is perfect for a short walk and sunset views, with black-footed rock-wallabies often seen.
