Perched on the edge of the red desert, Kings Canyon Resort is the perfect base for exploring the dramatic sandstone walls and palm-filled crevices of Watarrka National Park. With a mix of hotel rooms, cabins, and camping, this outpost combines comfortable accommodation with the raw beauty of the Australian outback. Wake to fiery sunrises over the canyon and spend your days hiking ancient gorges, spotting black-footed rock wallabies, and learning about the area’s significance to the local Luritja people.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk – The iconic 6km loop takes you up steep steps (the “Heartbreak Hill”) to breathtaking views across the canyon, past the weathered domes of the Lost City, and down into the lush Garden of Eden waterhole.
- Kings Creek Walk – A gentler 2.5km stroll along the canyon floor, following a sandy creek bed shaded by ancient cycads and river red gums.
- Sunset Viewing Platform – Just a short walk from the resort, this spot offers front-row seats to the ever-changing colours of the canyon at dusk.
- Helicopter Scenic Flights – Soar over the canyon for a bird’s-eye perspective of its sheer cliffs and hidden waterholes – a truly unforgettable way to grasp the scale of this landscape.
- Kings Canyon Cultural Tour – Join a local Luritja guide to learn about bush tucker, traditional land management, and the spiritual stories embedded in the rock.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend two nights at Kings Canyon Resort, allowing a full day for the Rim Walk (start early to avoid heat) and a relaxed afternoon for the sunset platform or a cultural tour. If you’re short on time, one night is enough to do the Rim Walk and watch the sunset, but you’ll miss the chance to explore the quieter Kings Creek Walk or take a scenic flight. Plan to arrive by mid-afternoon on your first day to settle in and catch the sunset.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Watarrka National Park – The resort sits right at the park entrance, so you can easily explore more of its walking trails, including the lesser-known Kathleen Springs Walk (a short drive away).
- Alice Springs – A 4.5-hour drive north-east, Alice is the gateway to the MacDonnell Ranges and offers a dose of outback town culture, including the famous Alice Springs Desert Park.
- Finke Gorge National Park – About 2 hours east of Kings Canyon, this park protects ancient cycad groves and the historic Palm Valley – a great detour for nature lovers.
