Alice Springs, the rugged heart of Australia’s Red Centre, is a dusty outback town that pulses with authentic Aboriginal culture, pioneering history, and stark desert beauty. More than just a stopover on the way to Uluru, Alice is a destination in its own right—a place where you can learn about the world’s oldest living culture, hike through ancient gorges, and watch the sky ignite with colour at sunset. The town’s laid-back, frontier vibe is infectious, and its location makes it the perfect base for exploring the dramatic landscapes of the MacDonnell Ranges.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – While technically a day’s drive away, the iconic monolith and the domed rock formations of Kata Tjuta are the ultimate outback experience. Combine with a stop at Kings Canyon for a classic Red Centre road trip.
- West MacDonnell Ranges – A stunning chain of gorges and waterholes, including Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and the ochre-red walls of Ormiston Gorge. Perfect for hikes and swims.
- Alice Springs Desert Park – A world-class wildlife sanctuary where you can see kangaroos, dingoes, and rare desert birds in natural habitats. Don’t miss the nocturnal house and the free-flight bird show.
- Royal Flying Doctor Service Museum – A fascinating insight into the aerial medical service that has been a lifeline for outback communities. The interactive exhibits are excellent.
- Anzac Hill – The best panoramic view of Alice Springs and the surrounding ranges, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- Kata Tjuta – The lesser-known but equally awe-inspiring 36 domed rock formations west of Uluru. The Walpa Gorge walk is a must.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend two to three full days in Alice Springs to explore the town and the West MacDonnell Ranges. If you’re including Uluru and Kings Canyon, budget at least five to seven days for a self-drive loop from Alice. For a deeper immersion, add an extra day for guided Aboriginal tours or a scenic flight over Lake Eyre (seasonal).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
