Undara Volcanic National Park, in Queensland's Gulf Savannah, is a geological wonderland where ancient lava tubes form a surreal underground world. This remote park offers a rare chance to explore vast, cathedral-like caves created by volcanic eruptions 190,000 years ago. The landscape above is equally captivating, with grassy woodlands and wildlife like wallabies and kangaroos.
Highlights & What to See
- Lava Tubes: Join a guided tour to explore the park's signature feature – massive, hollow tubes formed by flowing lava. The Archway and Stephenson's Tubes are particularly impressive, with eerie light filtering through collapsed ceilings.
- Undara Experience: This eco-resort offers accommodation, meals, and tours. Don't miss the sunset viewing platform for panoramic views of the savannah.
- Bushwalking: Several trails wind through the park, including the 1.5 km Lava Tube Walk and the longer Kalkani Crater Walk, which leads to a volcanic crater with 360-degree views.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for eastern grey kangaroos, wallaroos, and a variety of bird species, including the colourful rainbow bee-eater.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day to explore the park properly. Most visitors stay overnight at Undara Experience, allowing time for a morning guided tube tour and an afternoon walk or crater hike. If you're short on time, a half-day visit can cover one guided tour and a short walk, but you'll miss the sunset and evening wildlife.
