Rising from the red dust of the Northern Territory like a surreal sculpture garden, the Devils Marbles (Karlu Karlu to the local Warumungu people) are a sprawling collection of giant, rounded granite boulders scattered across a wide valley. These ancient rock formations, some balancing precariously on top of one another, shift colour dramatically from soft orange at dawn to fiery crimson at sunset. This is a deeply spiritual site and one of the most photogenic and otherworldly landscapes on the Stuart Highway.
Highlights & What to See
- Sunset & sunrise viewing: The rocks glow with intense colour as the low sun rakes across them; the main carpark has a dedicated viewing platform.
- Walking tracks: A short, easy 20-minute loop lets you wander among the boulders, while a longer 4km walk explores the full site.
- Cultural significance: The site is sacred to the Warumungu people; interpretive signs explain the Dreamtime stories of how the marbles were formed.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for red kangaroos, wallaroos and birdlife among the rocks.
- Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the night sky above the marbles is a dazzling canopy of stars.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the walking tracks and watching sunset or sunrise. If you’re a keen photographer or want to soak in the spiritual atmosphere, consider arriving late afternoon and staying until after dark for stargazing. The site is a perfect short stop on a longer drive between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.
