Rainbow Valley Nature Reserve

Rainbow Valley Nature Reserve, about 75 km south of Alice Springs, is a stunning palette of sandstone cliffs and bluffs that shift colour with the sun. This sacred Aboriginal site offers a raw, intimate outback experience, far from the crowds of Uluru. The reserve is named for the vibrant bands of orange, red, and purple that streak its ancient rock formations, best seen in the soft light of dawn or dusk. It's a place for quiet contemplation, short walks, and a deep connection to the Red Centre's geological and cultural history.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a half-day to a full day from Alice Springs. Drive out in the late afternoon to catch the sunset over the cliffs, then return after dark (the unsealed road is fine for 2WD in dry conditions). If you're camping, stay overnight at the basic reserve campground to experience the sunrise colours and the silence of the desert. Combine with a morning visit to the Ewaninga carvings or Chambers Pillar for a full day of exploration.
