There’s nothing quite like the freedom of hitting the open road in the Red Centre. Outback road trips here are about vast horizons, ancient landscapes, and the thrill of discovery. The Stuart Highway slices through the heart of the NT, linking Alice Springs to Uluru and beyond, while the Red Centre Way loops through West MacDonnell Ranges and Kings Canyon. This is self-drive country at its most epic—just you, the red dirt, and the endless sky.
Highlights & What to See
- Stuart Highway (A87): The main artery between Alice Springs and Uluru, with quirky roadhouses like Erldunda and the camel farm at Stuarts Well. Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles and wild camels.
- Red Centre Way: A 500-km loop from Alice Springs taking in the West MacDonnell Ranges (Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen Gorge), Kings Canyon (Rim Walk), and finally Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
- Kings Canyon: The Rim Walk is a must—a 6-km circuit with 360-degree views over the Watarrka National Park. The Garden of Eden waterhole is a cool oasis.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: Stop at Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and the Ochre Pits for short walks and swimming holes (after rain).
- Mereenie Loop Road: A 4WD-friendly scenic route between Kings Canyon and the West MacDonnells, passing through Aboriginal lands (permits required).
- Rainbow Valley and Chambers Pillar: Off the main highway, these geological wonders are perfect for sunset photography and camping under the stars.
Suggested Time to Spend
For a classic Red Centre road trip, allocate at least 5–7 days. A minimum of 3 days lets you drive Alice Springs–Kings Canyon–Uluru (one-way). With a week, you can add the West MacDonnell Ranges, Rainbow Valley, and side trips to Palm Valley or the Finke River. If time is tight, a 3-day loop from Alice Springs via the Red Centre Way is doable, but you’ll miss the deeper desert experiences. Pacing: drive no more than 3–4 hours a day to allow for walks and photo stops. The best times are April to October; summer (Nov–Mar) is scorching—carry extra water and travel early/late.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs: Start or finish here—stock up on supplies, visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum, and explore the Telegraph Station.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: The iconic red rock and the domes of Kata Tjuta are a 4–5 hour drive from Alice Springs. Allow at least two days.
- Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon): Often combined with Uluru; the Kings Canyon Resort offers accommodation and a scenic heli-flight.
- West MacDonnell National Park: A series of gorges and waterholes just west of Alice, ideal for day trips or overnight camping.
- Finke Gorge National Park: Home to the ancient Palm Valley and the Finke River, one of the world’s oldest river systems. 4WD recommended.
- Coober Pedy (SA): If you’re heading south, this opal-mining town is a quirky detour about 6 hours from Alice Springs.
