Olympic Dam is a remote mining town in South Australia's far north, best known for the massive BHP-operated copper, uranium, gold, and silver mine. While the mine itself is off-limits to visitors, the town offers a fascinating glimpse into life in one of Australia's most isolated industrial hubs. The stark red landscape and the sheer scale of the operation make this a unique stop for those intrigued by modern mining.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers pass through Olympic Dam on the way to or from Coober Pedy, spending 2–3 hours visiting the lookout and visitor centre. If you're interested in industrial tourism or have a fascination with mining, you could stretch it to a half-day. Overnight accommodation is limited, so plan to push on to Andamooka or Roxby Downs (the service town for the mine) if you need to stay.
