Andamooka is a remote opal-mining town in the South Australian outback, not the Northern Territory's Red Centre, but often included on itineraries through the region. This quirky settlement emerged from the red earth in the 1930s, its streets lined with dug-out homes, corrugated-iron shacks, and abandoned mines. Today, it offers a raw, authentic glimpse into the opal miner's life, with a dusty, frontier atmosphere that feels a world away from Coober Pedy's more touristy vibe.
Highlights & What to See
- Opal Mine Tours – Join a local guide to descend into a working opal mine, where you can try your luck at noodling (searching for opals in the mullock heaps) and learn about the town's fascinating history.
- Andamooka Opal Fields – The surrounding landscape is pockmarked with diggings; explore the 'dugouts' – homes carved into the hillside – and the quirky street art made from mining debris.
- Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda) – Andamooka is the closest town to this vast salt lake, one of the world's largest. In rare flood years, it transforms into a shimmering inland sea, attracting birdlife and photographers.
- Andamooka Homestead – A historic stone building that now houses a museum with local artefacts and opal displays, offering insight into the town's pioneering days.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to see Andamooka's main streets, visit a mine, and browse the opal shops. However, if you're keen to explore the Lake Eyre region or try your hand at fossicking, plan a full day. Combine it with a stop at Woomera or head north towards Coober Pedy for an outback road trip.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Coober Pedy – The world-famous opal capital, just 2.5 hours north, with its underground homes, churches, and golf course.
