Imagine stepping into a warm, crystal-clear pool surrounded by towering paperbark trees and the sounds of tropical birds — that's Mataranka Hot Springs. Located in Elsey National Park, about 100 kilometres south of Katherine, these thermal springs are a beloved swimming spot and a refreshing break from the heat of the Red Centre. The water maintains a constant 34°C, making it perfect for a relaxing dip any time of year. The springs are fed from the nearby Mataranka Thermal Pool, which flows into the Roper River, and the surrounding area is rich in Indigenous culture and history, including the famous novel We of the Never Never.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Pool: The main thermal pool is the star attraction — a large, spring-fed swimming area with clear, warm water, shaded by paperbark trees. It's perfect for a leisurely swim or just floating.
- Bitter Springs: A short walk away, these smaller, more secluded springs offer a quieter experience. The water here is slightly cooler but still beautifully warm, and the surrounding rainforest feels untouched.
- Elsey National Park: Beyond the springs, the park offers walking trails, birdwatching, and opportunities to spot wallabies and freshwater crocodiles. The Roper River is great for canoeing or fishing.
- Mataranka Homestead: This historic homestead and museum tell the story of the region's pastoral history and the inspiration behind We of the Never Never. You can also grab a cold drink or a meal here.
- Jalbilkya (Rainbow Spring): A smaller, less crowded spring that's a short drive away, offering another serene swimming spot.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a few hours to a full day at Mataranka Hot Springs. If you're driving from Katherine, it's easy to make a day trip, but consider staying overnight at the nearby Mataranka Homestead or caravan park to fully enjoy the springs early in the morning or late afternoon when they're at their most peaceful. A half-day is enough for a swim and a short walk, but allow a full day if you want to explore the national park trails or canoe on the river.
