Larrimah is a tiny, sun-baked outpost on the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory, famous for its frontier character and the quirky, oversized 'big' attractions that dot the Red Centre. With a population that has dwindled to a handful of residents, this former railway town offers a genuine glimpse into outback life and serves as a memorable stop on a drive between Alice Springs and Katherine.
Highlights & What to See
- The Big Stubby – Larrimah’s most iconic landmark, a giant replica of a beer stubby, celebrates the town’s former pub and its hardy drinking culture. Snap a photo before checking out the nearby playground and picnic area.
- Larrimah Museum – Housed in the old railway station, this small museum tells the story of the town’s construction during WWII and its role on the Stuart Highway. Look for artifacts from the era and tales of the eccentric locals who have called this place home.
- Pink Panther Hotel – Though currently closed, this famous pub was once the social heart of Larrimah, known for its pink-painted exterior and colourful characters. Even from the outside, it’s a must-see for its sheer outback oddity.
- Gorrie Station – A working cattle station just south of town, offering guided tours that give insight into modern pastoral life in the NT. You can also stay overnight in basic but comfortable accommodation.
- Birdwatching at the Larrimah Billabong – A short walk from the highway, this seasonal wetland attracts a variety of waterbirds, especially after rains. It’s a peaceful spot to stretch your legs and look for brolgas and jabirus.
Suggested Time to Spend
An hour is enough to see the main sights – the Big Stubby, the museum, and a stroll around the town – but if you’re not in a rush, linger for a picnic lunch or to chat with the locals at the roadhouse (if open). Most travellers pass through on a self-drive itinerary between Alice Springs (4 hours south) and Katherine (3 hours north), so treat Larrimah as a brief, quirky pit stop rather than a destination. If you’re keen on a station stay, allow an overnight.
