Just a 90-minute drive north of Perth, the Lancelin Sand Dunes are a surreal, lunar-like landscape of brilliant white sand stretching as far as the eye can see. This natural playground offers an exhilarating escape into a world of pure, wind-sculpted dunes that seem to belong in the Sahara rather than Western Australia.
Highlights & What to See
- Sandboarding: The main event. Rent a board in town and carve down the steep, soft slopes – it's like snowboarding on warm, squeaky sand. Beginners and kids will love the gentler runs.
- 4WD Adventures: Join a guided quad bike or dune buggy tour to roar across the ridges and feel the rush of the desert. Self-drive 4WD vehicles are also permitted on the dunes with a permit.
- Sunset Spectacle: The dunes glow golden as the sun sinks over the Indian Ocean. Climb the tallest dune for panoramic views that stretch from the coast to the outback.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for emus, kangaroos, and goannas that roam the fringes of the dunes, especially in the cooler hours.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample for a sandboarding session and a dune walk, but if you're keen on a 4WD tour or want to catch both sunset and sunrise, plan for a full day. Many visitors combine it with a morning at Lancelin's beaches and a late afternoon on the dunes. Overnight camping is not permitted on the dunes, but nearby caravan parks and holiday rentals make it easy to stay over.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Lancelin Town & Beaches: Just minutes away, the town offers fishing, swimming, and a laid-back vibe. The Lancelin Island is a short boat trip for snorkelling.
- Pinnacles Desert (Nambung National Park): About 30 minutes south, this otherworldly landscape of limestone pillars rising from yellow sand is a must-see, especially at sunset.
- Cervantes & Lobster Shack: Head 40 minutes north to sample fresh Western Australian rock lobster at the famous Lobster Shack, and explore the salt lakes and stromatolites at Lake Thetis.
- Yanchep National Park: A 45-minute drive south, this park features koalas, kangaroos, and limestone caves, plus scenic walks and picnic spots.
- Perth: Easily reached in 90 minutes, the capital city offers world-class dining, cultural attractions, and Kings Park.
