Kennedy Ranges National Park
Rising abruptly from the red desert plains of Western Australia’s Gascoyne region, Kennedy Ranges National Park is a dramatic escarpment of layered sandstone that glows amber and ochre in the shifting light. This remote, off-the-beaten-track park rewards self-drive adventurers with ancient gorges, surprising pockets of permanent water, and a profound sense of isolation that defines the true Outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Temple Gorge Walk – A short, stunning walk into a narrow chasm where palms and ferns cling to the cliffs; the silence here is almost tangible.
- Kennedy Ranges Lookout – Drive to the top for panoramic views across the endless spinifex plains and the serrated spine of the range.
- Mungada Ridge – A rocky 4WD track that threads along the crest, offering vertiginous views and a sense of being on top of the world.
- Permanent Pools – Several spring-fed rock pools (like those at Bundera and Mungada) provide rare, cool swimming spots and attract birdlife.
- Aboriginal Heritage – The area holds deep cultural significance for the Thiin people; look for rock art and grinding grooves near waterholes.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day to explore the main walks and viewpoints, but to truly absorb the solitude and night sky, camp overnight at one of the basic bush camps (no facilities). Two days allows time for the longer Mungada Ridge drive and a leisurely swim. The park is best visited between April and September; summer heat is extreme.
