Gluepot Reserve

Deep in South Australia’s Riverland, Gluepot Reserve is a birdwatcher’s paradise and a sanctuary for arid-zone wildlife. This 54,000-hectare former pastoral lease, now managed by BirdLife Australia, protects one of the last stands of intact mallee woodland. It’s a place of stark beauty: red sand dunes, bluebush plains, and the haunting calls of the endangered black-eared miner. For self-drive travellers, the reserve offers a raw, off-grid experience—camp under a blanket of stars and wake to the dawn chorus of honeyeaters, parrots, and the rare scarlet-chested parrot.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least a full day and one night to truly appreciate Gluepot. Arrive early morning to catch the bird activity, spend the day walking the trails, and stay overnight for the stargazing. If you’re a serious birder, two nights allow you to explore the entire reserve network. The reserve is remote, so fuel up and stock supplies in Waikerie or Berri before heading in.
