Exmouth, a sun-drenched coastal town at the tip of the North West Cape, is Western Australia's gateway to the astonishing Ningaloo Reef. This laid-back outpost is all about aquatic adventures, with the world's largest fringing reef lapping at its shores, offering some of the most accessible snorkelling and diving on the planet. Beyond the water, dramatic canyons, historic lighthouses and a vibrant local scene make Exmouth a compelling stop on any Kimberley or Coral Coast itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim with whale sharks (March–August): the ultimate bucket-list experience, with responsible tour operators ensuring a safe and ethical encounter.
- Snorkel Ningaloo Reef: step straight off the beach at spots like Turquoise Bay and Oyster Stacks to see turtles, rays and a kaleidoscope of fish.
- Explore Cape Range National Park: dramatic limestone gorges, secluded beaches and the stunning Yardie Creek gorge – keep an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies.
- Visit the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse: for panoramic views of the reef and the Indian Ocean, especially magical at sunset.
- Dive the HMAS Sydney II memorial and navy pier: two of Australia's best shore dives, teeming with marine life and history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers need at least three full days to do Exmouth justice: one for a whale shark or manta ray tour, one for exploring Cape Range National Park and its beaches, and a third for diving, kayaking or simply relaxing. If you're self-driving the Coral Coast, budget an extra day to account for the drive from Coral Bay (about 150 km south) and the journey north to Karijini or Broome.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Coral Bay: a smaller, even more laid-back sister town with superb snorkelling right off the beach – a perfect one-night stop.
- Karijini National Park: a full day's drive inland, but the gorges and swimming holes are a spectacular contrast to the coast.
- Ningaloo Marine Park: the entire stretch of reef south of Exmouth offers endless snorkelling and kayaking opportunities.
- Learmonth: a tiny settlement with an airfield and the fascinating Exmouth Gulf, great for birdwatching and fishing.
