El Questro Wilderness Park is a sprawling outback station turned adventure playground in the heart of Western Australia's Kimberley region. This million-acre property offers a raw, unfiltered taste of the Australian wilderness, where rugged gorges, thermal springs, and dramatic escarpments await. Whether you're soaking in a natural spa at Zebedee Springs or tackling the famous Gibb River Road, El Questro delivers an immersive outback experience that feels both ancient and alive.
Highlights & What to See
- Zebedee Springs: A series of thermal pools surrounded by palm-fringed gorges – arrive early (they open at 7 am) to have them almost to yourself.
- Chamberlain Gorge: Cruise or kayak through towering sandstone cliffs; keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles basking on the banks.
- El Questro Gorge: A challenging but rewarding hike that ends at a hidden waterhole and waterfall – bring sturdy shoes and plenty of water.
- Emma Gorge: A shorter, family-friendly walk leads to a stunning pool at the base of a 60-metre waterfall (best after rain).
- Birds Australia: Spot bowerbirds, finches, and the elusive purple-crowned fairy-wren in the park's diverse habitats.
- Station Life: Join a guided tour to learn about cattle mustering and the history of this working station.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to experience the park's highlights without feeling rushed. Spend the first day exploring the gorges and Zebedee Springs, the second on a longer hike or a scenic flight over the Bungle Bungles (bookable from the station), and the third relaxing or tackling the more remote trails. If you're on a tight schedule, a single day can still cover Zebedee Springs and one gorge, but you'll miss the park's quieter corners.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kununurra: The gateway town to the Kimberley, with Lake Kununurra and the Ord River irrigation area – good for supplies and a pre-trip meal.
- Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles): The iconic beehive-shaped domes are a 3-hour drive from El Questro; combine for a full Kimberley experience.
- Warmun (Turkey Creek): A small indigenous community known for its art centre and as a stop on the Gibb River Road.
- Lake Argyle: Australia's largest man-made lake, offering boat cruises, fishing, and incredible birdlife – about 1.5 hours from Kununurra.
- Gibb River Road: The legendary outback track itself, which runs past El Questro – a 4WD adventure through dramatic landscapes.
