Douglas Daly Nature Park is a hidden gem in the Top End, offering a serene escape into lush tropical woodlands and the crystal-clear waters of the Daly River. This park is a haven for nature lovers, with abundant birdlife, ancient boab trees, and peaceful swimming spots that make it feel like your own private oasis.
Highlights & What to See
- Daly River Crossing – A popular spot for swimming, fishing (barramundi and saratoga), and launching canoes. The river is wide and inviting, with sandy banks perfect for a picnic.
- Boab Trees – The park is dotted with massive, ancient boabs, some over 1,000 years old. Their distinctive bottle-shaped trunks are a photographer's dream, especially at sunset.
- Birdwatching – Over 200 bird species have been recorded here, including rainbow bee-eaters, kingfishers, and white-bellied sea eagles. Dawn and dusk are prime times.
- Floravilla Walk – A short, easy loop through monsoon forest, where you can spot cycads, palms, and wild orchids. Keep an eye out for wallabies and goannas.
- Camping by the River – Unpowered sites right along the riverbank offer a true wilderness experience. Falling asleep to the sound of flowing water is unforgettable.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can enjoy the park in a half-day visit, but to truly unwind, plan for a full day or an overnight stay. Arrive early to secure a riverside camp spot, spend the morning swimming and birdwatching, then take the Floravilla Walk in the cooler afternoon. If you're not camping, a day trip from Katherine or Daly Waters is feasible, though you'll wish you had more time.

- Litchfield National Park – Another 90 minutes west, Litchfield boasts waterfalls, magnetic termite mounds, and swimming holes like Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole.
